\n
\nThe above is a quote from Pam Robbins article about Mentoring.
\n
\nMentoring is a powerful process, however I believe it is much more complex than one might think. Here is a summary of Pam's article.
\n
\nKEY POINTS:
\n
\nMentoring is intended to provide newcomers with support. The term newcomers includes: a first year\/beginning teacher, or an experienced teacher who is new to the school, grade level or subject area. [Consideration must be given to new staff who commence working at a school during the year, not just at the start of the year ie like Tracee Steele mentioned]
\n
\nMentoring assistance must evolve with the newcomer's needs..."ultimately, students suffer the consequences of the inadequate support provided to beginning teachers". There are several stages in a newcomer's (ie beginning teacher) development ie survival, disillusionment, rejuvenation & reflection. Therefore their needs will change depending on the stage that they are in.
\n
\nREQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESS:
\n
\nAdministrative Support: ie make mentoring a priority, provide time, funding, recognise efforts of mentors\/newcomers\/other staff
\n
\nTrust: is a critical component of the mentor-newcomer relationship
\n
\nDefine mentoring: what is our vision of the role?
\n
\nName: what will the program be called and what will the participants be called ie mentor[I personally like wingman!], mentee\/newcomer\/protege?
\n
\nRoles & Responsibilities of the mentor: what will these be?
\n
\nStructure: will it be on a 1-1 or team basis?
\n
\nOther factors to consider: time, recognition, training, accountability & budget
\n
\nPOTENTIAL INHIBITORS:
\n
\nEducators must have a shared vision of mentoring to provide a clear picture of the expectations for mentoring & have a plan of action
\n
\nIndividuals may require incentives to become involved with mentoring ie financial or extra release time. Mentoring may need to be counted towards Professional Development ie training involved and ongoing time given
\n
\nResources that need to be provided ie time, materials, emotional support & $$$
\n
\nThe dilemma of how to enact the role as the year goes on?
\n
\nWHAT COULD THIS LOOK LIKE AT VARSITY COLLEGE?
\n
\nSmall committee to review and refine current processes
\n
\nCreation of a 'Welcome Pack' to include important info like a school map, list of routines ie staff meetings etc, emergency procedures, key phone numbers [and of course chocolate!!!]
\n
\nA welcome breakfast for mentors & newcomers
\n
\nRegular 'get-togethers' either 1-1 or team throughout the year
\n
\nAn end of year celebration for mentors and newcomers","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
